Core drills are considered the most suitable tool for drilling holes of diameter from 11 to 150 mm in various materials, including structural steel, stainless steel, cast iron of different grades.
The use of a pilot guide pin completely solves alignment and positioning problems. The tip of the pilot, entering the alignment hole or recess, eliminates radial runout. Drilling is performed accurately with the set center.
In the process of improving core drills with the help of pilots, another problem was solved - the cooling of the tool. The rear end of the pilot began to act as a valve that opens the coolant supply channel into the drill. In addition, upon completion of the drilling process, it pushes the rest of the workpiece out of the tool cavity.
Thus, in modern equipment, the pilot has three functions:
The process of performing these functions is shown schematically in the figure below:
Pilots are made of hard steels that provide minimum wear. When selecting this element, its compatibility with the specific type of core drill bit as well as the drilling conditions (depth) must be taken into account.
Unique sharpening and bohre™ geometry ensure efficient and accurate positioning of core drill bits
